"Lord, thou hast been our dwelling place in all generations. Before the mountains were brought forth, or ever thou hadst formed the earth and the world, even from everlasting to everlasting, thou art God (Psalm 90:1,2).

1. THE EXISTENCE OF GOD

1. It is taken for granted by the Scripture writers. "It does not seem to have occurred to any of the writers of either the Old or the New Testaments to attempt to prove or to argue for the existence of God" – William Evans, The Great Doctrines of the Bible.
2. God revealed Himself to Moses as "I AM" (Exodus 3:14).
3. The very first verse in the Bible assumes the existence of God: "In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth" (Genesis 1:1).
4. The Bible declares that the knowledge of God is universal (Rom.1:18-32; Psalm 19; Acts 17:22-34). God has revealed Himself to man through nature, man’s conscience, the Bible, and the Lord Jesus Christ. Jesus said, "He that hath seen me hath seen the Father" and "I and my Father are one" (John 14:9; 10:30). Christ is the image of the invisible God, God manifest in the flesh (Col.1:15; I Tim.3:16).
5. According to the Bible, only a fool could deny God (Psalm 14:1; 53:1).
6. Man recognizes the existence of God intuitively. Though God is invisible, His existence and providence are evident to all but fools (cf. Rom.1:22).
7. "God is infinite and perfect Spirit, in whom all things have their source, support and end" – Augustus H. Strong.

2. VARIOUS THEORIES OF GOD

1. Deism – a rationalistic or "natural" religion which teaches that God created the universe but then withdrew, leaving man to fend for himself.
2. Atheism – this view denies God’s existence altogether.
3. Agnosticism – this view questions whether or not God can be known. Our English word agnostic comes from the Greek words for "do not know." In Latin, the same word is ignoramus.
4. Pantheism – this view teaches that everything is God and God is everything; thus God is impersonal. This pagan philosophy is currently very popular through the new age movement, rock music, environmentalism, Eastern cults, strange college and university curricula, Walt Disney movies, etc.
5. Polytheism – the belief in many gods (Hinduism, Mormonism, et al.).
6. Monotheism – this is the belief that there is but one true God. Christianity, Judaism, and Islam are monotheistic religions. {However, Judaism and Islam reject the Lord Jesus Christ.}

3. THE UNITY AND THE TRIUNITY OF GOD

1. Judaism’s basic confession of faith is, "Hear, O Israel: the LORD our God is one LORD" (Deut.6:4). This proclaims the unity of God but also intimates the Trinity. The Hebrew word for God, Elohim, is a plural word, peculiar to the O.T. and appears in no other Semitic language.
2. The Hebrew word translated "one" denotes a compound unity, not a simple unity (cf. Gen.2:24 for a similar usage of the word "one").
3. Whereas the O.T. emphasizes the unity of God but intimates the Trinity, the N.T. emphasizes the Trinity as well as the unity of God. "Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost" (Matt.28:19).
4. In the O.T. God frequently speaks of Himself with plural pronouns (Gen.1:26; 3:22; 11:7; Isa.6:8).
5. Sometimes the "angel of the LORD" in the O.T. is referred to as God and yet is distinguished from Him (Gen.16:7-13; 18:1-21; 19:1-28). This points to personal distinctions within the Godhead.
6. The prophet Isaiah distinguishes between the Redeemer, the Lord God, and his Spirit (Isa.48:16,17). The Redeemer, also called "the Holy One of Israel" is obviously the Lord Jesus Christ (cf. Isa.59:20; Rom.11:26).
7. Zechariah records that the LORD of hosts will send the LORD (Zech.2:10,11). This is a reference to the second coming of Christ (cf. Zech.14:3,4; Acts 1:11).
8. The N.T. more clearly brings out the doctrine of the Trinity (Matt.3:16,17; II Cor.13:14; I John 5:7).
