ENOCH WALKED WITH GOD

Pastor James J. Barker

Text: GENESIS 5:21-24

INTRODUCTION:

  1. Enoch is one of the great heroes of the Bible, though he is overshadowed by his great-grandson Noah.
  2. Speaking of Enoch, R.A. Torrey wrote, "History outside of the Bible is utterly unacquainted with him, yet he stands out as one of the most remarkable and admirable men of whom history speaks, a man whom God honored as He has honored but one other member of the entire race."
  3. The reference to the one other man is the prophet Elijah.  Neither of these men ever died.
  4. When we read Genesis 5, we see this repetitious phrase, "and he died" (5:5, 8, 11, 14, 17, 20).
  5. Then we come to Enoch and there is a notable change.  We see that Enoch never died.  "And all the days of Enoch were three hundred sixty and five years: And Enoch walked with God: and he was not; for God took him" (5:23, 24).
  6. Enoch had a son named Methuselah, the oldest man who ever lived.  But he too eventually died (5:27).
  7. But Enoch never died.   Hebrews 11:5 says, "By faith Enoch was translated that he should not see death."
  8. This morning we will look at this great man Enoch, the man who walked with God (Gen. 5:22-24).

  1. HIS GENEALOGY
  2. HIS TESTIMONY
  3. HIS TRANSLATION

I. HIS GENEALOGY

  1. In Jude 14, we are told Enoch was "the seventh from Adam."
  2. We see the genealogy here in Genesis 5.  After Cain killed his brother Abel, Adam had a son named Seth.  His name means "appointed" (Genesis 4:25).
  3. Seth was the father of Enos.
  4. Enos was the father of Cainan.
  5. Cainan was the father of Mahalaleel.
  6. Mahalaleel was the father of Jared.
  7. And Jared was the father of Enoch (Gen. 5:18).
  8. Enoch was "the seventh from Adam."  Seven generations from Adam to Enoch.
  9. When we look at the genealogy of Enoch, we should consider that people lived to be much older in those days before the flood.
  10. For example:
  • Adam — 930
  • Seth — 912
  • Enos — 905
  • Cainan — 910
  • Mahalaleel — 895
  • Jared — 962
  • Enoch — 365 (did not die)
  • Methuselah — 969 (oldest man who ever lived)
  • Lamech — 777
  • Noah — 950 years. (Genesis 9:29)
  1. There are various explanations for why people enjoyed a much longer lifespan back then. When God created this world it was a perfect paradise.
  2. The phrase, "It was good" occurs six times (Gen. 1:4, 10, 12, 18, 21, 25).
  3. Then in Genesis 1:31 we read, "And God saw every thing that he had made, and, behold, it was very good.
  4. Conditions then were vastly different than they are now. Sin has ruined the world we live in today.
  5. God created the earth perfect. But when Adam sinned this world began to decay.
  6. God put man in a perfect paradise (Gen. 2:8, 15).  But man sinned and it has been downhill ever since.
  7. Romans 5:12 says, "Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned."
  8. Contrast the beautiful Garden of Eden with a dirty city neighborhood today -- strewn with trash, broken glass, with ugly graffiti scribbled on walls, broken down houses and apartment buildings, etc.
  9. Bro. Casillas mentioned how they tore down a ghetto in Puerto Rico and built a beautiful new neighborhood in its place.  Within a few years it was ruined.  The problem is sin.
  10. Someone has said the word sin starts off with the ssss of the serpent (Gen. 3:1).
  11. Things were bad right from the start.   Adam and Eve sinned in Genesis 3.
  12. In Genesis 4:8 we read that Cain killed his brother Abel.
  13. Things kept getting worse and worse till we read in Genesis 6:5 and 6, "And God saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every imagination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually.  And it repented the LORD that he had made man on the earth, and it grieved him at his heart."
  14. Creationists believe that the pre-flood vapor canopy (referred to as "the firmament" in Genesis 1:6) filtered out radiation, and held in incoming solar heat making the earth a warmer place to live. This firmament (called "expanse" in the Scofield margin) separated the waters above from the waters below.
  15. The firmament collapsed at the time of the flood.  "In the six hundredth year of Noah's life, in the second month, the seventeenth day of the month, the same day were all the fountains of the great deep broken up, and the windows of heaven were opened" (Gen. 7:11).
  16. Therefore, the earth after the flood was completely different than the earth before the flood. There were widespread global differences. These would include changes in the climate, composition of the atmosphere, cosmic radiation reaching the earth, ozone concentration, ultra violet light, background radiation, diet, and many other changes.
  17. These changes caused a rapid decline of the longevity of post flood humanity.
  18. By the way, Enoch had a son named Methuselah, the oldest man who ever lived.  Methuselah's name means, "When he dies, it (the flood) shall be sent.”
  19. The flood began right after the death of Methuselah.  The flood began five years after the death of Lamech, the son of Methuselah, the grandson of Enoch, and the father of Noah.

II. HIS TESTIMONY

  1. Hebrews 11:5 says, "By faith Enoch was translated that he should not see death; and was not found, because God had translated him: for before his translation he had this testimony, that he pleased God."
  2. Do you have that kind of testimony?
  3. One preacher (John Phillips) described Enoch's life this way:
  4. Surrounding gloom -- it was a wicked day and age (4:23, 24; 6:3).
  5. Saving grace -- Enoch walked with God (5:22, 24).
  6. Simple goodness -- "he had this testimony, that he pleased God."
  7. Sudden glory -- God translated him into heaven.
  8. Enoch was a great preacher.  He preached about the second coming of Christ thousands of years before the first coming of Christ! (Jude 14, 15).  Therefore, he was also a great prophet.
  9. In fact, he is considered the very first prophet.
  10. Twice we are told, "Enoch walked with God" (Gen. 5:22, 24).
  11. What does it mean, to "walk with God"?
  12. Evangelist R.A. Torrey said, "To walk with God means to live one's life in the consciousness of God's presence and in conscious communion with Him, to have the thought constantly before us, 'God is beside me,' and every now and then to be speaking to Him, and, still more, listening for Him to speak to us. In a word, to walk with God is to live in the real, constant, conscious companionship of God."
  13. To walk with God implies agreement.  Amos 3:3 says, "Can two walk together, except they be agreed?"
  14. To walk with God implies spiritual communion.  First John 1:6, 7 says, "If we say that we have fellowship with him, and walk in darkness, we lie, and do not the truth: But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin."
  15. Ephesians 5:15 says, "See then that ye walk circumspectly, not as fools, but as wise."
  16. This is what it means to walk with God.
  17. Romans 6:4 says we "walk in newness of life."
  18. Romans 8:1 says we "walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit."
  19. Romans 8:4, and Galatians 5:16 and 5:25 says we "walk in the Spirit."
  20. Romans 13:13 says, "Let us walk honestly, as in the day; not in rioting and drunkenness, not in chambering and wantonness, not in strife and envying."
  21. Second Corinthians 5:7 says, "For we walk by faith, not by sight."
  22. Ephesians 5:2 says we are to "walk in love."
  23. Colossians 4:5 says we are to "walk in wisdom."
  24. This was Enoch's testimony.  We showed a DVD to our young people the other night about George Washington Carver, and it was emphasized throughout this documentary that he had a wonderful testimony for the Lord.

III. HIS TRANSLATION

  1. Genesis 5:24 says, "And Enoch walked with God: and he was not; for God took him."
  2. Hebrews 11:5 says, "By faith Enoch was translated that he should not see death; and was not found, because God had translated him."
  3. There is only other man who never died, and that was the prophet Elijah (II Kings 2:1-11).
  4. At the rapture there will be many people who will leave this world without dying (I Thess. 4:13-18).
  5. The word "rapture" does not appear in the New Testament, but the doctrine goes all the way back to Enoch.
  6. The word means "to snatch away," "to catch up," "to be caught up."
  7. Our Lord said, "Let not your heart be troubled: ye believe in God, believe also in me.  In my Father's house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you.  And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also" (John 14:1-3).
  8. The Lord is coming back.  Are you ready?

CONCLUSION:

  1. Much has been written and much has been preached about the significance of the name of Enoch's son Methuselah -- "When he dies, it (the flood) shall be sent.”
  2. A.W. Pink wrote, "The name of his son strongly implies that Enoch had received a revelation from God. Methuselah signifies, 'When he is dead it shall be sent,' i.e., the Deluge (Newberry). In all probability then, a Divine revelation is memorialized in this name...It is certainly implied that from the time Methuselah was born, the world lost all its attractiveness for Enoch and from that time on, if never before, he walked with God" (Gleanings in Genesis).
  3. Beloved, God has given us a divine revelation just as He gave to Enoch.  Peter says, "We have also a more sure word of prophecy" (II Peter 1:19).
  4. Pink said, "the world lost all its attractiveness for Enoch and from that time on, if never before, he walked with God."
  5. May the world lose all of its attractiveness for us, and may we like Enoch learn to walk with God! (Col. 3:1-4).
