GETTING READY FOR THE KINGDOM

Pastor James J. Barker

Text: ISAIAH 32:1-20

INTRODUCTION:

1.     Isaiah 30 and 31 deal with Judah’s alliance with Egypt (30:1-3, 7; 31:1-3).  Judah was afraid of the Assyrians, but rather than go to the Lord for help, Judah went to Egypt.

2.     Isaiah 32—35 are largely prophetic, though they do touch upon the Assyrian invasion.  We have seen that in the book of Isaiah (and other OT prophets) the near and far horizons blend.

3.     The Scofield Study Bible says, “In chapters 32—35, the same blended meanings of near and far fulfillments are found. The near view is still of Sennacherib’s invasion, the far view of the day of the Lord (Isaiah 2:10-22; Revelation 19:11-21) and the kingdom blessing to follow.”

4.     It is impossible to take these chapters literally and not believe in the premillennial second coming of Christ.

II. THE CARELESS WOMEN

III. THE COMING HOLY SPIRIT

I. THE COMING KING

1.     Isaiah 32—35 deal extensively with the second coming of the Lord Jesus Christ (32:1; 33:17).

2.     Fanny Crosby wrote, “I know I shall see in His beauty
The King in whose law I delight;
Who lovingly guardeth my footsteps,
And giveth me songs in the night.

3.     She was inspired by Isaiah 33:17.

4.     Fanny Crosby was also inspired by Isaiah 32:2 (and Exodus 33:22), when she wrote, “He hideth my soul in the cleft of the rock
That shadows a dry, thirsty land;
He hideth my life with the depths of His love,
And covers me there with His hand.”

5.     These Scriptures remind us that as our King, the Lord Jesus is our Protector, our Hiding Place, and our Rock in a weary land.

6.     I love that old Ira Sankey song (the words were written by Vernon Charlesworth):

The Lord’s our Rock, in Him we hide,
A Shelter in the time of storm;
Secure whatever ill betide,
A Shelter in the time of storm.

Oh, Jesus is a Rock in a weary land,
A weary land, a weary land;
Oh, Jesus is a Rock in a weary land,
A Shelter in the time of storm.

A shade by day, defense by night,
A Shelter in the time of storm;
No fears alarm, no foes afright,
A Shelter in the time of storm.

Oh, Jesus is a Rock in a weary land,
A weary land, a weary land;
Oh, Jesus is a Rock in a weary land,
A Shelter in the time of storm.

The raging storms may round us beat,
A Shelter in the time of storm
We’ll never leave our safe retreat,
A Shelter in the time of storm.

Oh, Jesus is a Rock in a weary land,
A weary land, a weary land;
Oh, Jesus is a Rock in a weary land,
A Shelter in the time of storm.

O Rock divine, O Refuge dear,
A Shelter in the time of storm;
Be Thou our Helper ever near,
A Shelter in the time of storm.

Oh, Jesus is a Rock in a weary land,
A weary land, a weary land;
Oh, Jesus is a Rock in a weary land,
A Shelter in the time of storm.

7.     Judah had some corrupt kings, but the Lord will reign in righteousness (32:1, 16; 33:5).

8.     Not only will the Lord reign, the Bible says “princes” shall rule with Him (32:1; cf. Luke 22:30; II Tim. 2:12; Rev. 2:26, 27; 3:21).

9.     Our Lord will commit the practical and mundane aspects of governance to others.  Several prophecies refer to a resurrected King David (cf. Jer. 30:9; Ezek. 34:24; 37:24, 25; 44:3; 45:16, 17; 46:2, 16-18).

10. You will recall that Israel is described by the prophet Isaiah as a nation in a spiritual stupor (29:9).  But when Christ returns, they will be able to speak and see clearly (32:3, 4).

11. I was driving in my van yesterday and I heard a radio interview with a voodoo priest named Patrick Bellegarde-Smith.  This man was honored as a “scholar.”  He is the chairman of the Department of “Africology” at the University of Wisconsin in Milwaukee, and he has co-edited several books about voodoo.

12. In the interview he said abortion was not good, but “you have to do what you have to do,” and “the spirits understand.”

13. He said there is no such thing as original sin.  He insisted that men are not sinners.   He said, “There are no sins. There are consequences to one’s action.”  He said, “There's no such thing as heaven and hell.”

14. He said, “God is absolutely neutral.”

15. I was waiting for the woman who was interviewing him to point out that everything he said contradicted the Bible, but she did not.

16. Wicked men like this are honored in this world, but things will be much different when Christ returns (Isa. 32:5-8).

17. HA Ironside said, “These haughty despisers will no longer be permitted to mislead” (Isaiah).

II. THE CARELESS WOMEN (32:9-14)

1.     Here we see a warning to frivolous, worldly, fashion-crazed women.  Isaiah touched upon this theme in Chapter 3.  In fact, Isaiah 3:12 could be applied to the USA if Mrs. Clinton is elected next year.

2.     Isaiah exhorted the careless women to wake up from their complacency.   He says in 32:9, “Rise up…”

3.     We have here a stern rebuke to those who only live for self-gratification and self-indulgence and worldly pleasures.

4.     We can apply these warnings to women today, who spend more time getting dolled up then they do praying, and who spend more time reading worldly fashion magazines then they do reading the Bible.

III. THE COMING HOLY SPIRIT (32:15-20).

1.     I preached about the Holy Spirit being “poured out” on Wednesday night (Isa. 32:15).  Interestingly, as I preached, rain was pouring down on my head from our leaky ceiling.

2.      The Bible often speaks of the Holy Spirit being poured out (cf. Isa. 44:3; Ezek. 39:29; Joel 2:28; Zech. 12:10).

3.     In Acts 2, Peter applied these prophecies to the day of Pentecost, but they await a future fulfillment (cf. 32:18).

CONCLUSION:

1.     Judah could have enjoyed many of the blessings described here in this chapter – peace, safety, quietness, fruitfulness, and righteousness – had they turned to the LORD for help.

2.     Instead they turned to Egypt, and lost out on the blessings of God.

3.     Isaiah 32:20 refers to the godly Israelite remnant restored to their land in the millennium.  However, we can apply these words tonight – it is a blessing to sow the Word of God!
