HOW GOD HAS REVEALED HIMSELF?

Pastor James J. Barker

Text: PSALMS 19

INTRODUCTION:

  1. God has revealed Himself to man three ways: in His creation, in His Word, and in His Son.
  2. I am frequently asked about the heathen and their responsibility before God. The Bible says God has revealed Himself to the heathen in His creation (Ps.19:1; cf. Psalm 8:1,3,4; Romans 1:18-20).
  3. God has given a certain measure of light to all men. What they do with that light is up to them (cf. John 1:6-9).
  4. Some respond to the Light and God gives them more light (John 1:10-13). A good example of this is found in the conversion of Cornelius (Acts 10).
  5. But many reject the Light and go deeper into darkness (John 3:16-21). There are many examples of this in the Bible: Pharaoh, Pontius Pilate, Judas Iscariot, Herod Agrippa, Felix.
  6. Secondly, God has revealed Himself in His Word (Ps.19:7-9). We have a responsibility to get out the Word of God, because "faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God" (Rom.10:17).
  7. Thirdly, and most importantly, God has revealed Himself to us in His Son. He is our Redeemer (Ps.19:14). He died on the cross in order to redeem us from our sins.

I. GOD HAS REVEALED HIMSELF IN CREATION.

    1. Before you and I ever saw our first Bible, God revealed Himself to us – "The heavens declare the glory of God" (Ps.19:1). During the French Revolution, an atheist named Jean Bon St. Andre said to a peasant, "We are going to pull down all your churches, so there won’t be anything left to remind you of your old superstitions." The peasant replied, "But, sir, you cannot pull down the stars."
    2. God has given us a witness that is unmistakable – the heavens above us. It is quite wondrous and majestic and glorious!
    3. Let me stop here for a moment and say that there is absolutely no conflict whatsoever between the testimony of nature and the testimony of the Word of God.
    4. Unregenerate men have tried to create a conflict, but true science will never contradict the Bible. Keep in mind, evolution is not true science but merely a theory, and a ridiculous one at that.
    5. Today people talk a lot about "outer space." One fellow wrote a letter to the editor complaining that the politicians aren’t talking enough about outer space. {Personally, I’d like to send some of these politicians on a one-way ticket to outer space.}
    6. So people are talking about "outer space." The Bible calls this "the heavens" and "the firmament" (Ps.19:1; cf. Gen.1:8).
    7. "The heavens declare the glory of God" (Ps.19:1). We have been enjoying some beautiful weather lately – sunny skies, cool temperatures, very pleasant. The trees are starting to change color. I do not know about you, but it makes me want to praise the Lord.
    8. This witness of creation is so strong that the apostle Paul quotes verse 4 in Romans 10:18, "Their sound went into all the earth, and their words unto the ends of the world."
    9. The Gospel light, like the sun, casts its beams all over the earth.
    10. God is speaking if any one will take the time to stop and listen. The problem is most people just don’t want to listen. That’s why rock and rap "music" is so popular. You show me a person who is listening to this loud, nasty boom-boom "music" and I will show you some one who is out of touch with God.
    11. David also mentions the testimony of the sun, pictured here "as a bridegroom coming out of his chamber, and rejoicing as a strong man to run a race" (Ps.19:4-6).
    12. I do not see how any one can look up at the sun and be an atheist (cf. Ps.14). I met such a fool weeks ago. May God have mercy on his wicked soul.

II. GOD HAS REVEALED HIMSELF IN HIS WORD.

    1. Man has polluted God’s creation but man has not been able to corrupt God’s Word. It is "perfect" (Ps.19:7).
    2. People spend a lot of time and money trying to figure out why this world has so many problems – war, poverty, crime, etc. It is very simple to me. People just need to get right with God. That is why we need to preach the Word of God.
    3. "The law of the LORD is perfect, converting the soul" (19:7).
    4. There can be no genuine conversion without the Word of God (I Peter 1:23-25). People talk about going to heaven when they are as wicked and as lost as can be! How can this be? They are ignorant of God’s Word.
    5. Do you remember what the apostle Paul said to young Timothy? "And that from a child thou hast known the holy scriptures, which are able to make thee wise unto salvation…" (II Tim.3:15,16).
    6. Many people today (even many saved people) lack spiritual discernment. People need to start seriously reading the Bible. "The testimony of the LORD is sure, making wise the simple" (19:7b).
    7. God has given us everything we need for our salvation. And He has given us everything we need in order to live right (Ps.19:7-11).
    8. The Word of God brings conviction of sin, repentance, conversion, sanctification, wisdom, joy, illumination – "enlightening the eyes" (19:8b), endurance – "enduring for ever" (19:9), righteousness (19:9b).
    9. There is nothing in this world that can be compared with God’s Word. It is better than gold and sweeter than honey (19:10).
    10. Worldly people are trying to satisfy themselves with television and pornography and gambling and making a lot of money and illicit sex and alcohol and cigarettes and drugs and rock music and nicer cars and bigger homes and fancy vacations, but they are still not happy.
    11. They need God. They need the Word of God.
    12. Sinners could stay out of a lot of trouble if they would heed the warnings found here in God’s Word (19:11). John Bunyan wrote in the front of his Bible, "This Book will keep you from sin or sin will keep you from this Book."
    13. Read God’s Word and obey God’s Word, and "keep" God’s Word – "in keeping of them there is great reward" (19:11).
    14. What reward? A clean conscience, a holy life, a pure heart, godly friends, answered prayer, peace and joy, and much more.

III. GOD HAS REVEALED HIMSELF TO US IN HIS SON.

    1. The Psalmist asks, "Who can understand his (man’s) errors?" (Ps.19:12). The answer is no one. Man is a hopeless sinner. Man needs cleansing from sin.
    2. So David goes on to ask, "Cleanse Thou me from secret faults" (19:12b). And where can a sinner go for cleansing? There is only one place we can go – to the cross; to our Redeemer (19:14b), the One who died on the cross for our sins.
    3. There are sins of commission and there are sins of omission. A Sunday School teacher asked a little boy if he knew the difference between sins of commission and sins of omission. He said, "Sins of commission are the sins we commit, and the sins of omission are the ones we meant to commit but forgot."
    4. There are sins everyone knows about and there are secret sins that only God knows about (9:12). Man is a hopeless sinner. He needs to be cleansed from sin (19:12).
    5. And it is only the blood of Jesus Christ that can cleanse us from sin (I John 1:7-9).
    6. I heard about these two brothers that were real dirty rascals. They had the worst reputation in town. Then one of them died. The other brother went to the preacher and said, "Please conduct my brother’s funeral, and I would like for you to refer to him as a saint." The preacher said that was out of the question. The man said, "I wish you would. In fact, I’ll even give $50,000 to the church if you do." The preacher then agreed. At the funeral, the preacher said, "Mr. So and So was a scoundrel, a thief, a liar, a dirty rotten sinner. We all know what a wicked life he lived. Yet compared to his brother he was a saint."
    7. Unsaved friend: Do not wait till you die to get things right. You can have a fancy funeral, a beautiful eulogy, plenty of flowers, and be buried in the nicest cemetery in NY, but if you leave this world without Christ your soul will go straight to hell.
    8. There are "presumptuous sins" (19:13), willful sins, sins men know are wrong but still commit them. Man is a hopeless sinner. He needs to be redeemed.
    9. The apostle Paul writes in Ephesians 1:7, "In whom we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of sins." Sinner friend, have you experienced this forgiveness and cleansing?
    10. The Psalmist asks, "Let them (sins) not have dominion over me" (19:13). He wanted to be "innocent from the great transgression" (19:13).
    11. There are undoubtedly some gathered here today that are not innocent of this "great transgression." This great transgression is rejecting Jesus Christ, rejecting the Word of God, rejecting salvation.
    12. There is no greater transgression. It is the most terrible sin.

CONCLUSION:

  1. The Bible says, "Be sure your sin will find you out."
  2. I read recently about an American ship called Nancy that was captured by the British in 1799. The officers on board the Nancy were arrested and charged with carrying contraband. However, before they reached port they managed to toss the incriminating papers overboard.
  3. Soon the crew was on trial and it looked like they would be released for lack of evidence. But right around the very end of the trial, another British ship brought in a harpooned shark. When the shark was cut open, the missing papers from the Nancy were discovered inside.
  4. The papers were rushed to the courtroom and the men were convicted.
  5. There is no escape from sin. But thank God there is forgiveness. There is pardon. And there is cleansing. And it is only found in the Lord Jesus Christ.
